BABYLAS Memorial 24 January in the Latin Church; 4 September in the Greek Church Profile Bishop of Antioch in 240. In 244 he refused entrance to liturgical services to emperor Philip the Arabian, due to the emperor having murdered his predecessor; he ordered him to take his place among the penitents by the church door, which the emperor did. During the Decian persecution (260) he made an unwavering confession of faith in public; thrown into prison where he died a martyr. He asked to be buried in his chains to symbolize his love and loyalty to God. Caesar Gallus built a church at Daphne near Antioch in honor of Babylas, and the saint's bones were transferred to it. Julian the Apostate later consulted the nearby oracle of Apollo; when he received no answer, he blamed it on the proximity of the saint, and had the martyr's sarcophagus returned to its original site. In the middle ages the bones of Babylas were carried to Cremona. Died of abuse and mistreatment in prisons c.260 Canonized Pre-Congregation

Ferdinand Mary Baccilleri Memorial 13 July Profile Raised in a pious family, he was educated by the Barnabites in Bologna, and the Jesuits in Ferrara, Italy. Jesuit novice in Rome in 1838, but health problems force him to drop out and return home. When he improved, he studied theology in Ferrara, and was ordained in 1844. Noted spiritual director and preacher of home missions. He taught Italian and Latin at the seminary in Finale Emilia, and studied civil and canon law at the Pontifical University of Bologna. In 1851 the Archbishop of Bologna asked him to administer a troubled parish in Galeazza. He was so successful that he was appointed him the parish priest; he stayed for 41 years. In 1867 Father Ferdinand lost his voice, and was forced to write out his lessons and have others deliver them. With his public work restricted, he concentrated on one-to-one spiritual direction, hearing confessions up to 16 hours at a time. His direction, and his personal holiness, attracted so many spiritual students that without his planning it, a religious congregation formed around the parish. The Confraternity of the Sorrowful Mother was founded to teach poor girls in the area. Later, the Servite Third Order was established. In 1862 he opened a small convent for the members, and in 1866 they were formalized under the rule of the Mantellate Servile Sisters of Rome; the community was approved by the Archbishop of Bologna in 1899, and by the Vatican in 1919. The Confraternity continues its work today in Italy, Germany, Brazil, South Korea and the Czech Republic. Born 14 May 1821 in Campodoso (modern Modena), Italy Died 13 July 1893 of natural causes Beatified 3 October 1999 by Pope John Paul II Canonized pending

Isidore Bakanja
天主教友 - 2007-8-21 14:35:00
Memorial 15 August Profile Worked as an assistant mason for white colonists in what was then the Belgian Congo and later known as Zaire or simply the Congo. Convert, baptized 6 May 1906 at age 18 after receiving instruction from Trappists missionaries. Rosary in hand, he used any chance to share his faith; though untrained, many thought of him as a catechist. He left his native village because there were no fellow Christians. Worked as a domestic on a Belgian rubber plantation. Many of the Belgian agents were atheists who hated missionaries due to their fight for native rights and justice; the agents used the term "mon pere" for anyone associated with religion. Isidore encountered their hatred when he asked leave to go home. The agents refused, and he was ordered to stop teaching fellow workers how to pray: "You'll have the whole village praying and no one will work!" He was told to discard his scapular, and when he didn't, he was flogged twice. The second time the agent tore the scapular from Isidore's neck, had him pinned to the ground, and then beaten with over 100 blows with a whip of elephant hide with nails on the end. He was then chained to a single spot 24 hours a day. When an inspector came to the plantation, Isidore was sent to another village. He managed to hide in the forest, then dragged himself to the inspector. "I saw a man," wrote the horrified inspector, "come from the forest with his back torn apart by deep, festering, malodorous wounds, covered with filth, assaulted by flies. He leaned on two sticks in order to get near me - he wasn't walking; he was dragging himself". The agent tried to kill "that animal of mon pere", but the inspector prevented him. He took Isidore home to heal, but Isidore knew better. "If you see my mother, or if you go to the judge, or if you meet a priest, tell them that I am dying because I am a Christian." Two missionaries who spent several days with him reported that he devoutly received the last sacraments. The missionaries urged Isidore to forgive the agent; he assured them that he already had. "I shall pray for him. When I am in heaven, I shall pray for him very much." After six months of prayer and suffering, he died, rosary in hand and scapular around his neck. Born c.1887 at northeast Republic of the Congo Died martyred 15 August 1909 Venerated 2 April 1993 by Pope John Paul II Beatified 24 April 1994 by Pope John Paul II Canonized pending
